He started his business in 1969, when in Zabrze the Silesian Centre for Medical Technology (ŚOTM) had been created. On its basis, in 1977 there were created two independent units: Research and Development Centre of Electronic Medical Equipment OBREAM and Electronic Medical Equipment Works TEMED (manufacturing factory). In 1995, OBREAM was transformed into the Institute of Medical Technology and Equipment ITAM. Currently, he is the only research institute in Poland, leading within statutory activity the scientific work and research and development in the field of medical technology.

The main areas of research and development include: diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, intensive monitoring of patients, medical resuscitation, rehabilitation, biomedical engineering, telemedicine, the use of computer technology in medicine, safe use of medical equipment as well as the research, testing and certification of medical equipment. The Institute has  developed on an international scale such areas of medical technology as: computer systems for cardiotocographic signal analysis and fetal monitoring and within the Centre of Excellence STIMCARD - electrostimulation non-invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and the periodic control and supervision of patients undergoing cardiostimulation therapy.

ITAM also specializes (as the only one in the country) in the production of: external invasive, transesophageal and non-invasive transcutaneous cardiostimulators, intended for cardiac diagnosis and therapy. As part of the Institute the Testing Laboratory LAB-ITAM operates, being organized and managed according to the requirements of PN-EN ISO / IEC 17025. It carries out the testing of medical equipment and medical systems for electrical, mechanical, thermal, functional and other safety, under ambient conditions and different environmental exposures. This testing is carried out within own projects as well as for external clients during the process of medical devices admission for use in the European Union.

The quality system in ITAM improved since 2002, is compatible with current EU law at all stages of development of new medical devices (hardware and software), including design, development, production, service and distribution. ITAM is therefore an essential link between the area of basic research and the initial phase of industrial research (technical universities, PAN institutes), and the area of implementation (manufacturers of medical devices), allowing obtainment of the highest possible level of technological readiness (TRL) of innovative solutions created within the framework of joint projects.

Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology has highly qualified scientific staff, able to fully use scientific possibilities of the various research laboratories and carry out advanced research projects in the field of biomedical engineering. Furthermore, employees of the Faculty have experience in commercialization and implementation, to production and clinical practice, medical technology and devices. Faculty of Biomedical Engineering consists of four Departments representing a broad area of biomedical engineering:

  • Department of Biomaterials and Medical Devices Engineering
  • Department of Biomechatronics
  • Department of Biosensors and Processing of Biomedical Signals

PROFESSOR ZBIGNIEW RELIGA’S FOUNDATION OF CARDIAC SURGERY DEVELOPMENT IN ZABRZE was set up in 1991 in order to introduce the latest methods and techniques of rescuing human life into clinical practice, to support cardiac surgery and related fields and to support health protection and promotion activities.

The Foundation’s activities are focussed primarily on conducting and financing research, innovation and implementation works for the treatment of heart diseases, especially in the area of medical, pharmaceutical, biological, and mathematical and physical, chemical and technical sciences; on the enhancement of medical and nursing staff; on the activity in the field of scientific information concerning cardiology and cardiac surgery; on running heart diseases treatment databanks; on training, information, educational and publishing activity; on technology transfer initiatives. The foundation is a non-profit organisation having the status of a public benefit organisation.

The Foundation’s activity is in conformity to the Quality Management System as per ISO 9001:2008 in terms of research and implementation works, training activity and funds acquisition.

The Process Laboratory of the Artificial Heart Workshop is a certified manufacturer of heart prosthesis parts acc. to ISO 13485.

The Foundation enjoys the status of the Excellence Centre for New Technologies of Heart Diseases Treatment “ProCordis”.

The Foundation’s research and scientific activity is of multidisciplinary character and encompasses, in particular, aspects associated with biomedical engineering, heart prostheses construction, medical robotics and tissue engineering. The activity is conducted by the internal Institute for Hearth Prostheses including the Artificial Heart Workshop, Biocybernetics Workshop and Bioengineering Workshop.

The research assumptions and plans are defined in the following three research programmes setting the research directions and tasks to be pursued:

  1. The “Polish Artificial Heart” Programme – concentrates on the development and clinical implementation of a group of Polish heart prostheses, whose technology and construction is increasingly more advanced and diversified in terms of application time and a level of implementation in a patient’s body and the development of circulatory system aiding methods.
  2. “Robots and Innovative Surgical Tools” Programme – concentrates on the development and clinical implementation of innovative tools, i.e. a mechatronic device “extending” a surgeon’s hands, the modelling and simulation methods of surgical procedures to optimise their progress and didactic facilities.
  3. “Tissue Engineering and Biological Heart Valve Prostheses” Programme – focuses on the development of constructions and technologies for biological heart valve prostheses and other biomaterials fabricated by tissue engineering and cellular breeding methods.

Medical University of Silesia has over sixty-year tradition. The University was established in 1948 as the Medical Academy in Rokitnica Bytomska.

During first five years University consisted of one school of medicine and dentistry department, but thanks to opening many clinical and theoretical units was able to ensure complete educational process. Theoretical units, rector’s office and library were located in Rokitnica and clinical units were located in hospitals in Zabrze and Bytom.

In second half of the 50’s decision was made to establish the University’s Campus in Katowice. In 1971 this plan was successfully implemented. The Headquarters of the Medical University of Silesia was moved to Katowice. In this time our University became the largest medical school in Poland. Three new schools were opened i.e. School of Pharmacy with the Unit of Medical Analytics, second School of Medicine and School of Nursery (further included to second School of Medicine).

Further expansion of educational profile took place after the year 2000. At the time were established: School of Health Care in 2001 and in 2002 School of Public Health.

University has developed its activity and has become large Higher Education Institution. Now in five schools is provided process of education on 13 fields of studies focused on preparing specialists for work in various communities and national health care system. Now Medical University of Silesia provides education to over 9000 students, PhD and postgraduate students. The University conducts also classes in English (English Program) for students from all over the world.

The Medical University of Silesia is constantly modernizing its didactic, research and clinical infrastructure. The construction of the Education and Medical Simulation Centre, implemented within the Infrastructure and Environment Programme gave opportunity to teach students of SUM using modern didactic based on simulation and IT techniques.

The University plays also an increasingly significant role in development of areas such as: cardiology, cardiosurgery, gastroenterology, hematology, nephrology and much more. Clinical hospitals of the Medical University of Silesia providing best quality health care, are mentioned as the best centres in Poland.University intensively conducts scientific research which is reflected by many awards for its staff. One of the top priorities for the continued growth of the University is the expansion of the various forms of collaboration in the areas of research. The University maintains and develops various forms of cooperation with foreign research centers and universities worldwide through: joint research, participation in international programs and research projects, joint publications and participation in scientific conferences, as well as through numerous student and staff exchanges. The Medical University of Silesia carries out active international cooperation within “Lifelong Learning Programme”. To this date, the University has entered into many partnership agreements with medical universities and research centers worldwide.

Over the years, members of the SUM research staff have been receiving prestigious awards and are widely recognized for the excellent quality of their work, research and teaching.
